Summer reading!

Check out one or more of our many new books to read over the summer break! Stop by our school library learning commons and talk to one of the staff, Mr. Orme, Esquimalt High School’s teacher-librarian, or Amber Hibbs, our school library clerk.  Mr. Orme and Amber are happy to show you what we’ve got in recently and recommend books that fit with your interests!  Graphic novels, audiobooks, novels and non-fiction – you choose!  The library is open before school, at break, during the lunch hour and after school or if you have time during class ask your teacher for a referral slip to go to the library.

This year we’re loaning books out to students over the summer to let everyone continue to enjoy the collection of great books we’ve been building for years. Even students with books at home have appreciated having increased access at other schools that have loaned books over the summer break. Public libraries are great places to get great books too, but many students have said it’s not always easy getting there.

It’s important that students can choose what they want to read. This has been confirmed by research involving students and other stakeholders https://journal.canadianschoollibraries.ca/support-student-reading-over-the-summer/. That research has also shown how much students appreciate having a professional on hand to guide their choices when needed.

You might think that loaning books out over the summer is going to lead to lots of lost books, but other schools haven’t found this to be a big problem. In fact, students really appreciated the trust they were given to care for and return books they borrowed. Students followed through with their responsibility to return books in September and the trusting relationships built vastly outweighed the minimal loss of books.

So drop by the library! Check out some of the hundreds of new books available and talk to Mr. Orme, Esquimalt High School’s teacher-librarian, or Amber Hibbs, our school library clerk, about borrowing some books for the summer break!
